How to apply

Entry Requirements

Degree: Applicants must hold an honours degree of a UK university, higher education institution or an acceptable equivalent at 2.2 or above.  For secondary applicants your degree should include a minimum content of 50% which is directly related to the subject you have chosen to teach. If your degree is not in the subject specialism we encourage applicants to contact us to discuss their application on an individual basis. Applicants must be able to demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge for the age range they intend to teach and we often make offers which are conditional upon a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course being completed.  Applicants with a non-UK degree will be required to demonstrate equivalence with UK standards through UK ENIC.

GCSEs: Applicants must be in possession of appropriate prior qualifications including GCSE grade 4 or above in English (or English Language) and Mathematics. Those training within Primary must also hold a GCSE grade 4 or above in Science.

Applicants who are otherwise suitable for ITT but, for whatever reason, have not successfully achieved a GCSE grade 4 may be given an opportunity to show that they can nevertheless meet the required standard by taking an equivalence test, these are available through either Equivalency Testing or A* Star Equivalency.

Applicants with non-UK secondary school qualifications will be required to demonstrate equivalence with UK GCSE standards through UK ENIC.

All applicants must be able to provide original certificates of academic and equivalent qualifications.  Applicants will be required to cover any costs incurred through equivalency testing or UK ENIC.

DBS and Occupational Health: All applicants must undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) and an occupational health assessment to assess fitness for teaching. Applicants successful in securing a SCITT Tuition Fee place will be required to cover the cost of these clearances themselves – they are currently approximately £50 for the DBS and £10 for the standard health assessment however if this health assessment raised any issues further reports may be required at additional expense to the applicant.

Communication Skills: Applicants should have the ability to communicate clearly and accurately in both written and spoken English.

Visa to Study: Applicants from non EU countries must hold an appropriate visa stating that they are eligible to study in the UK for the duration of the course. The South Downs SCITT and our Partnership Schools are not able to provide sponsorship for a Visa.
